Botox is a neurotoxin that is injected into specific treatment areas and used to minimize fine lines and wrinkles particularly in the upper portion of the face (between brows, forehead and around eyes). Botox works by blocking the transmission of the chemical agent acetylcholine which tells muscles when to move. As a result, the muscles treated are temporarily paralyzed allowing the skin to lie flat and the wrinkles produced by movement to minimize if not disappear. Results typically appear 5-7 days after treatment and maximize at 14 days. Botox lasts between 3-4 months.
Dysport is a direct competitor to Botox. Although the two have technical differences, the active ingredient is the same (botulinum toxin type A). Like Botox, Dysport is a neurotoxin injected into specific treatment areas to minimize fine lines and wrinkles. Dysport results appear in 3-5 days with maximum results at 14 days and results typically last between 3-4 months. The main difference between the two is that Dysport has a wider spread effect making the results appear more natural but also increasing risk of spread into accessory muscles. It is important that your injector is experienced in using Dysport in order to avoid unwanted side effects. Dysport is also contraindicated in patients with milk allergies.
Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers, often called “fillers”, offer a non-surgical solution to the aging face. With the aging process comes a loss of volume resulting in “sagging” or “drooping” skin. Dermal Fillers restore the volume loss resulting in a more youthful appearance. The most common places to get dermal fillers are the cheeks, lines between nose and mouth, lines from corners of mouth to chin and the lips. Unlike Botox and Dysport, Fillers do not relax the muscle but rather add volume. A good way of thinking of the two is: Botox/Dysport from the eyes up and fillers from the cheeks down.
There are several fillers on the market and deciding on the right one for you should be done with your health care professional/injector. Of the fillers carried at Miramae, we mostly use Hyaluronic Acid fillers (Restylne, Perlane and Juvederm). These last anywhere from 4-12 months and offer little to no downtime. Redness, Swelling (typically lasting 2-3 days) and bruising (typically lasting 5-7 days) are the most typical side effects. Risks of allergic reaction are minimal due to hyaluronic acid being a naturally occurring substance in your body.
Our second most commonly used filler is a calcium based filler, Radiesse. Calcium based fillers last longer with results seen for 12-18mo but also propose a higher risk of side effects. Placed in the proper areas of the face in the right amounts, Radiesse can add needed volume and even cause collagen stimulation. A distinct difference between Calcium based fillers and Hyaluronic filers is that Hyaluronic acid fillers can be reversed where Calcium based cannot.
